Our Approach To Carbon & How We Work

ETC-Africa are certified Carbon Footprint analysts with over 100 Greenhouse Gas Inventories under our belts. We work with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard (arguably one of the most widely used and recognised standards for carbon footprint reporting in the world) ensuring our work is undertaken at a globally recognised standard. For many industry types, we also supplement our methodologies for Greenhouse Gas Reporting with various industry standard guidelines and tools to ensure best practice.

Our reports go beyond technical analysis, incorporating layman's explanations of key outcomes, we try hard to keep things simple and seamless. We emphasize relevant reporting area that facilitates quantifiable sustainability outcomes, seamlessly integrating carbon emissions data into social investment projects, public relations, and operational opportunities. We want to be able to make a practical difference to businesses!

Our approach takes into consideration your business goals and priorities, offering recommendations and tools for managing data gaps and improving efficiency over time. We work hard to ensure this is not an overly complex process and keep it simple!

We also provide training and work with support for staff on your carbon footprint management, data collection, applying emissions factors, and calculating CO2e, ensuring everyone from your marketing team to your guides who may be dealing with your guests are able to communicate clearly around climate change and your carbon footprint.

In addition to generating Greenhouse Gas Inventories, many clients also use ETC Africa to support their applications to the Science Based Targets Initiative - a process whereby companies can chart their pathway to a net-zero, boost innovation and drive sustainable growth by setting ambitious, science-based emissions reduction targets. In addition to the Science Based Targets, we also facilitate the submission of carbon data to the Carbon Disclosure Project for reporting and CDP scoring.

Typically, our approach is to begin with workshop session will include coming to an agreement on and discussions around:

  • Organisational boundaries as well as align methodology as per Carbon Protocol Corporate Standard (Equity, Financial or Control approach.)
  • Plan data collection and related activities (as well as any new/additional data sources)
  • Identify anomalies and specialised data which may need to be gathered or research data that may need to be extrapolated.
  • Identify and agree on which categories of Scope 3 (voluntary emissions) are to be included in the reporting and methodology for gathering this data.
  • Agree on intensity reporting opportunities and appropriate methodologies. This will allow for benchmarking and year-on-year meaningful comparisons over time.
  • Agree on approach to internal offsets as well as opportunities/priorities/projects which are being implemented or planned.
  • Understand business goals and sustainability priorities to ensure we can provide meaningful reporting on our side.

Our Greenhouse Gas Inventories (Carbon Footprint Reports) are:

  • Carried out according to the standards set out by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard. (internationally recognised standard)
  • Complete and covers Scope 1, Scope 2 as well as agreed Scope 3, voluntary emissions (Category 1-8, upstream emissions as well as possible Category 9-15, downstream emissions)
  • Include an assessment of potential internal offsets including alternative energy, recycling activities, internal efficiencies etc.…
  • Comparable in terms of a greenhouse gas inventory for various individual operational areas such as administration, individual warehouses or facilities and underlying investments.
  • Inclusive of intensity reporting within various operational areas and across the organisation (CO2e per tonne production or alternative intensity ratios)

Our reporting will also consider:

  • Assessment of any carbon tax exposure or related disclosure requirements.
  • Identifying data gaps and key areas for future data gathering or monitoring.
  • Training and support for staff to ensure internal capacity to manage data collection and ongoing monitoring of carbon emissions.
